A couple of summers ago the man who I owe all my love of music to retired from teaching. He soon after started embarking on a performing career with B3, his son (another drummer) and a great guitar player. I had the great honour of playing at his first ever CD release party back in my hometown.  Here is one tune from the night that i just found online. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HAz8-LEUyNA

YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW…

that drumming could help your employees defend themselves from stress and contribute to lower staff turnover.

A few years ago participants (staff) at a Pennsylvania nursing home – took part in six weekly drumming sessions. The result? It showed their mood improved by almost 50%. Dr. Barry Bittman, the author of the report, said there was a decrease in feelings of fatigue and depression. The positive effects of the drumming continued for a year, he added. Dr. Bittman said it resulted in 49 fewer employees resigning from the nursing home over the 12 months that followed.

Back then he called for drumming sessions to be introduced across all industries. In the drumming sessions at the nursing home, the participants performed a series of musical exercises, combined with discussion. When the stats came in after the sessions, the staff were said to show a 46% improvement in mood. And six weeks after the sessions ended, the same people showed more than 62% improvement in mood. This suggests that the emotional boost can continue long after the music has ended.

How to create turning points of success.

Does success have a turning point? I think most people would say yes. I would define this turning point as when everything begins to shift in your favour. You are not necessarily out of the woods yet but you can feel the momentum starting to go your way. Most often we only see these turning points when we look back on what has happened. They are virtually impossible to see as they occur. At best you only get a sense of them.

Imagine a tricky situation, this could be anything from trying to sell a product, winning some kind of game or even building a business. It is safe to say that a great deal of skill and know-how goes into all of these things. But none of them have a definite outcome and because of numerous challenges all three can be extremely difficult in their own way.

How does one create a turning point of success? You do it by doing things that could potentially lead to success. You stoke your fire and hope something catches.

You can stoke this fire in many ways. probably the first thing you have to do is take a risk, get outside your comfort zone, do something different to change the momentum. On top of that you must be sensitive to possible opportunities and you must be able to read multiple situations very well. Does experience help? Sure, but even with experience there are no guarantees. Many a seasoned pro in any field will tell you that.

What is the impact of all this on your team? We all know that when things get tough it can bring people down. So good leadership is key. Being a leader who can shake things up a bit and get people excited can really make the difference between sinking or swimming. Being able to give your team confidence by allowing them to try something different could make all the difference.

It all comes down to belief, support and empowering people to draw from themselves. This type of attitude can do wonders for a teams morale. And when a few things start to fall into place, momentum just might shift in your favour.
